Delta Electric is leveraging its technical expertise to bring innovative solutions for Power Factor Correction to the mining industry. Mines have a huge dependence on electrical power and associated utility costs have risen dramatically over the past few years, putting the squeeze on operating margins. Applying its 30+ years of know-how, Delta Electric is blazing the trail for its customers in lowering energy costs and improving profitability through Power Factor Correction.

Power Factor is the ratio of true power to apparent power, representing how much of the energy supplied actually goes to productive use versus waste. A  Power Factor of 1 means that all of the energy supplied is being used productively—theoretically desirable but practically impossible to achieve.  Any Power Factor over .8 means that power is being used efficiently.

The best way to improve Power Factor depends largely on the particular operating considerations involved. In some cases, motors or transformers can be sized more closely to the actual work requirement, effectively improving the Power Factor. It may be that motor idling or "no load" running periods can be reduced, producing a twofold benefit: improved Power Factor and more effective energy management.

Although there is no single "right" answer, the installation of low-cost, Power Factor correction capacitors offers one of the most effective corrective measures. Inductive (motor) loads have a negative effect on the electrical system, and Power Factor correction capacitors can be used to offset this inefficiency.

Delta Electric offers a range of fixed capacitors, adjustable capacitor units, electronic power conditioning units with Power Factor correction and synchronous motors with Power Factor correction. In addition to bringing these products to a mining operation, we also:

  • Analyze potential cost savings
  • Review power circuits to determine inefficiencies and corrective measures
  • Develop Power Factor Project Internal Rate of Return
  • Provide consulting services for equipment review
  • Provide savings estimates on new projects utilizing Power Factor Correction
  • Provide monitoring/analysis services on a periodic basis to determine effectiveness and efficiency of corrective measures
